Mike joined the club in the late 1970s when his son, John, joined as a playing member having left Bancroft's School. Although not a player himself, Mike became very involved with the club throughout the 1980s and 90s, regularly attending pre-match lunches and socialising in the bar during the week.
Mike was also a stalwart in the club's other social activities - for many years he travelled on golf, sailing, fishing and Five Nations trips organised by the club to Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France.
Although his attendance was limited to organised lunches and events during the 2000s, Mike returned to regularly watching the 1st XV on Saturdays when his grandson, Matt joined in 2007 and played for us for several seasons.
Ill health in the last few seasons had limited Mike's attendance at the club, but he did watch a recent vets game and took great pleasure in seeing some old faces.
He leaves behind his wife Anne (who, together with Peggy Collins and Jackie Bingle herself formed a force to be reckoned with in previous years!), children John and Lorraine, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The funeral will take place at St Thomas's in Woodford Green at 11am on Monday 15 September, followed by a short private service at Hainault Crem. The wake will likely be at Chigwell Golf Club from 2.30 (TBC). Anyone who knew him is very welcome at the funeral
If anyone would like to join the family to remember Mike at the wake, please contact Matt on 07985264821 so that he can confirm catering numbers.
